The Gujarat Urban Development Mission launched the Lake and Air Watch initiative in the 11 March 2026 current-affairs context. The initiative is designed to monitor lake health and air quality across 17 municipal corporations and 152 municipal areas, making a total coverage of 169 urban local bodies. Its relevance comes from the way urban environmental issues such as lake-area changes, algae growth, waste accumulation and air pollution connect directly with municipal administration and environmental management.

The programme uses satellite-based monitoring for lakes and real-time sensors for air quality. The satellite system will monitor changes in lake area, algae growth, waste accumulation and water-quality indicators. Air quality monitoring stations will provide real-time AQI data. With a budget of Rs 10 crore, the system includes a centralised digital dashboard showing maps, trends and automatic alerts. Alerts when pollution levels rise or lake conditions deteriorate can help departments respond in time. Consolidation of data from multiple departments is also an important governance feature of the initiative.

For examination preparation, questions may focus on the launching body, coverage, budget, monitoring components and the role of the dashboard. In mains, it can be used as an example of urban governance, data-based environmental monitoring, inter-departmental coordination and pollution-control response. Its static-GK linkage is with lake conservation, water-quality indicators, AQI and the role of urban local bodies.
