East Timor (Timor-Leste) formally joined ASEAN as its 11th member on October 26, 2025, at the annual summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Its flag was added alongside the other 10 members in a formal ceremony. This was ASEAN's first expansion since Cambodia joined in 1999.

East Timor first applied for membership in 2011 and received observer status in 2022. PM Xanana Gusmao called it a historic moment bringing 'immense opportunities' for the nation of 1.4 million. Among Asia's poorest countries, Timor-Leste hopes to benefit from integrating its fledgling economy into the regional bloc.
