Saina Nehwal, India's most decorated badminton player, confirmed her retirement from competitive badminton on January 22, 2026, after nearly two years away from the court due to chronic knee issues that had plagued her career since 2019. The 35-year-old made the announcement in a formal statement, ending a career spanning over two decades that transformed Indian badminton on the global stage.

Saina's illustrious career includes a historic bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, making her the first Indian to win an Olympic medal in badminton. She achieved a career-high World No. 1 ranking in April 2015, becoming only the second Indian shuttler to reach the pinnacle. Her major achievements include gold medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2014 Asian Games, multiple World Championship medals, and numerous BWF Super Series titles.

She was conferred the Padma Bhushan in 2016, the Arjuna Award in 2009, and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2009-10, making her among the most honoured athletes in Indian sports history. Her retirement marks the end of a golden era alongside PV Sindhu in Indian women's badminton. The Badminton Association of India praised her contributions and announced plans to involve her in coaching and mentoring young players at the national academies. Her career record includes 24 international titles and over 400 international match victories.
