The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to cancel the IPL 2026 opening ceremony, which was originally scheduled for March 28 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, as a mark of respect for the 11 people who lost their lives in a tragic stampede at the same venue last year.

Despite the absence of an opening ceremony, the tournament began as scheduled with the first match between RCB and SRH. The BCCI's decision was widely appreciated as a sensitive gesture.

Enhanced security protocols were implemented at the Chinnaswamy Stadium for the IPL season, highlighting ongoing emphasis on crowd safety at sporting venues across India.

The 19th edition of the IPL will run through May 2026 with 74 matches. This is the first full season since RCB's historic maiden title win in 2025.
