The Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways notified operational guidelines for two major shipbuilding initiatives on December 27, 2025 — the Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Scheme (SBFAS) and the Shipbuilding Development Scheme (SbDS) — with a total budget outlay of ₹44,700 crore (US$4.9 billion).

Under SBFAS, normal vessels costing up to ₹100 crore qualify for a 15% grant, while larger and specialised vessels (LNG carriers, offshore units, green-fuel ships) receive 15% on the first ₹100 crore and 20-25% thereafter. The schemes apply to all contracts signed between September 24, 2025 and March 31, 2036. The initiative aims to boost India's share of global shipbuilding market from under 1% to a significant level.
