On September 1, 2025, the Department of Posts (DoP) under the Ministry of Communications signed a Memorandum of Understanding with ESRI India Technologies Private Limited to strengthen the Digital Postal Index Number (DIGIPIN) initiative. The MoU was signed at Dak Bhawan, New Delhi, aiming to make the DIGIPIN system more robust and citizen-friendly through advanced geospatial technology.

Under this agreement, the Department of Posts will leverage ESRI India's high-resolution imagery and detailed street basemaps for the DIGIPIN portal. The collaboration enables integration of DIGIPIN with ESRI India's Living Atlas portal, making the digital addressing system accessible to the broader Geographic Information System (GIS) community. ESRI India will also provide technical support for seamless integration of geospatial data layers.

The DIGIPIN system assigns a unique geo-coded digital address to every location in India using a grid-based approach, converting latitude and longitude coordinates into a standardised alphanumeric code. This addresses the challenge of incomplete or ambiguous physical addresses that hamper last-mile delivery and emergency services. The system is particularly beneficial for rural and semi-urban areas where formal addressing infrastructure is limited.

The initiative supports the Digital India programme and is expected to improve e-commerce deliveries, emergency response coordination, and government service delivery across the country's over 1.64 lakh post offices.
