Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was observed on January 9, 2026, commemorating Mahatma Gandhi's return from South Africa to India on this date in 1915. As 2026 is a non-convention year (the full PBD Convention is biennial, next due in 2027), the day was marked with regional events, webinars, cultural programmes, and youth-focused interactions organised by Indian missions abroad.

The day honours the Indian diaspora's contributions to India's progress through knowledge, investment, and global representation. India's diaspora of over 32 million is the world's largest, with remittances exceeding $125 billion in 2025. The 19th full PBD Convention is expected in 2027.
