India's Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets the Amul brand, was ranked first among the world's top cooperatives in the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) World Cooperative Monitor 2025. This marks a significant recognition of India's cooperative dairy model.

Amul, founded in 1946 in Anand, Gujarat by Tribhuvandas Patel under the guidance of Dr. Verghese Kurien, processes about 35 million litres of milk daily from 3.6 million farmer members across 18,600 village cooperatives. The 'Operation Flood' model transformed India from a milk-deficient country to the world's largest milk producer, with estimated production of 248 million tonnes in 2024-25. Rajasthan's Saras brand follows the Amul cooperative model and is the second-largest cooperative dairy in India.
