India has officially nominated the Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath, near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, for the UNESCO World Heritage List under the 2025-26 nomination cycle, ending its 27-year wait on the tentative list. Sarnath is where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon (Dhammachakkappavattana Sutta) after enlightenment.

Key monuments include the Dhamek Stupa (c. 500 CE), believed to mark the exact spot of Buddha's first sermon, and the Ashokan Pillar originally crowned by the Lion Capital, now India's National Emblem. The ASI will install a new plaque crediting Babu Jagat Singh (1787-88), a local ruler, for bringing Sarnath's archaeological importance to light, replacing the earlier British attribution. A UNESCO evaluation team visited Sarnath in late September 2025.
