Sir William Mark Tully, legendary BBC journalist and former bureau chief in New Delhi for 20 years, passed away on January 25, 2026 at age 90 at Max Hospital, Saket, due to multi-organ failure following a stroke. He had been admitted for age-related health issues.

Known as the 'Voice of India' in the BBC, Tully covered all major events in South Asia including the Bhopal gas tragedy, Operation Blue Star, Indira Gandhi's assassination, anti-Sikh riots, Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, and the Babri Masjid demolition. PM Modi paid condolences. Born in Kolkata in 1935, Tully was awarded a Padma Shri in 1992 and knighted in 2002 for his services to journalism.
