The Combined Commanders' Conference 2025, held in Kolkata from September 15-17, 2025, marked an important point in India's defence reform agenda. India announced the establishment of 3 Joint Military Stations. These will be the first such stations on the Indian mainland. The stations are meant to bring together personnel, logistics and operations of the Army, Navy and Air Force in an integrated manner. The core purpose is to improve coordination among the three services, reduce operational duplication and strengthen preparation for joint operations.

The same reform package also merged the education branches of the three services into a single Tri-Services Education Corps. It covers major training institutions such as the NDA, IMA, Indian Naval Academy and IAF Academy. This shows that the push for jointness is not limited to operations; it also extends to military education and training.

For exam preparation, this issue connects current affairs with static GK themes such as defence reforms, national security, military reforms and theaterisation. Theaterisation broadly refers to integrating the capabilities of different services under a more coordinated command structure for more effective operations. For RAS and UPSC-style questions, the prelims focus can be the venue, dates, number of stations and institutions covered, while the mains angle can be defence modernisation and institutional reform in India's armed forces.
