The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Amendment Rules came into effect on February 20, 2026, coinciding with the final day of the India AI Impact Summit. The rules mandate social media platforms to remove unlawful content within 3 hours — drastically reduced from the earlier 24-36 hour deadline.

AI-generated content must carry 'prominent' labels through visible disclosures, audio prefixes, and embedded metadata. 'Synthetically generated information' is formally defined as audio, visual, or audiovisual content artificially created or altered to appear real, excluding routine edits and accessibility features. Platforms must deploy technical measures to verify synthetic content accuracy. Compliance with takedown norms, including via automated tools, preserves safe harbour protection under Section 79 of the IT Act.
