Marine Fisheries Census 2025 Launched — India's First Fully Digital Fisheries Census
Union Minister of State for Fisheries George Kurian launched the household enumeration phase of the National Marine Fisheries Census (MFC) 2025 at ICAR-CMFRI, Kochi, on October 31, 2025, under the slogan 'Smart Census, Smarter Fisheries'. The 45-day nationwide census (November 3 to December 18, 2025) covers 1.2 million fisher households across 5,000 villages in 13 coastal States and Union Territories.
MFC 2025 uses a digital ecosystem with VyAS-NAV, VyAS-BHARAT and VyAS-SUTRA for real-time, geo-referenced enumeration, verification and monitoring. It is conducted by the Department of Fisheries under PMMSY, with ICAR-CMFRI as nodal agency and FSI as operational partner, and supports digital registration for PM-MKSSY benefits.
