The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2025 to Maria Corina Machado 'for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy'. The announcement was made on October 10, 2025.

Machado, born in 1967, founded the Atenea Foundation in 1992 for street children and co-founded Sumate, which promotes free elections. She was elected to the National Assembly in 2010 but was expelled by the regime in 2014. Her candidacy for the 2024 presidential election was blocked by the Maduro government. Machado is currently in hiding; the prize was collected by her daughter at the ceremony in Oslo on December 10, 2025.
