The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) celebrated its 79th Foundation Day on January 6, 2026 with the launch of the BIS Integrated Standardisation Portal for managing the complete digital lifecycle of Indian Standards. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi launched the beta version along with several key initiatives.

The SHINE (Standards Help Inform & Nurture Empowered Women) initiative targets women-centric capacity building in standards and quality. BIS has formulated over 23,300 Indian Standards covering sectors from food safety to information technology. The new portal will digitize the entire process from standards proposal to publication, reducing the timeline from 2 years to under 12 months. BIS was established in 1987 under the BIS Act and functions under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs.
