Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on November 24, 2025, succeeding Justice BR Gavai. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Surya Kant will have a tenure of approximately 15 months as CJI.

Born in 1962 in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Surya Kant started practising law at District Court Hisar in 1984. He was elevated as Punjab & Haryana HC judge in 2004, became Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh HC in 2018, and joined the Supreme Court in 2019. He is known for landmark rulings on social justice, education, and civil liberties.
