India marked World Wetlands Day on February 2, 2026, with the theme 'Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage'. Union Minister for Environment Bhupender Yadav highlighted India's wetland conservation achievements — Ramsar sites have grown from 26 in 2014 to 98 in 2026, covering over 13.6 lakh hectares. India now ranks first in Asia and third globally after the UK and Mexico.

Experts called for integrating traditional and indigenous knowledge systems into wetland governance. Rajasthan has 2 Ramsar sites — Keoladeo National Park (Bharatpur) and Sambhar Lake. The Sambhar Lake, India's largest inland saltwater lake, faces ongoing challenges from illegal salt mining and encroachment. World Wetlands Day also marks the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971 in Ramsar, Iran.
