On December 10, 2025, the World Bank Board of Executive Directors approved financing for two clean air programmes in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to improve air quality for 270 million people. These are India's first airshed-based, multi-sectoral programmes by state governments to reduce air pollution.

The Haryana Clean Air Project ($300 million) will support clean transport including electric bus services and electric three-wheelers in Gurugram, Sonipat, and Faridabad, and promote cleaner MSME technologies and paddy stubble management. The UP Clean Air Management Programme (UPCAMP, $299.66 million) will help 3.9 million households access clean cooking, introduce 15,000 electric three-wheelers and 500 electric buses in Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, and Gorakhpur, and replace 13,500 polluting heavy-duty vehicles.
