German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited India on January 12-13, 2026, his first official visit, at the invitation of PM Modi. The two leaders held restricted and delegation-level talks in Ahmedabad and jointly visited Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram and the Makar Sankranti kite festival.

19 MoUs and Joint Declarations were signed covering defence cooperation, semiconductors, critical minerals, emerging technologies, green fuels, skills training, health, and education. Merz was accompanied by 23 leading German CEOs. A landmark announcement was visa-free transit for Indian passport holders transiting through Germany. The partnership was recast to include new areas like semiconductor supply chains, critical minerals sourcing, and green hydrogen collaboration.
