REET Level 1 study notes
Parts of Speech and Basic Syntax — Primary English (Classes I-V)
At the primary level, English grammar teaches eight parts of speech: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction and interjection. A noun names, a pronoun replaces a noun, a verb shows action or links the subject to information, adjectives describe nouns and adverbs describe verbs. The three basic sentence patterns are S-V, as in `Birds fly`, S-V-O, as in `Sita eats a mango`, and S-V-C, as in `She is a teacher`. For REET Level 1, grammar should be taught through pictures, sorting, matching, action and familiar textbook sentences, not through heavy technical analysis.
