Meaning and scope of IYCF
Infant and Young Child Feeding, usually called IYCF, covers feeding from birth to 2 years of age and beyond. It includes early initiation of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months, continued breastfeeding after 6 months, and timely, adequate, safe and responsive complementary feeding. The first 1,000 days, counted from conception to a child's second birthday, are a high-yield idea in nutrition because growth, brain development, immunity and later health are strongly influenced by feeding and care during this period.
For an objective recruitment paper, the most important point is sequence. Birth to 6 months is the exclusive breastfeeding period. At 6 completed months, breast milk alone no longer meets all energy and nutrient needs, so complementary foods are added. Breastfeeding does not stop at this point; it continues along with family foods, with increasing frequency, quantity and diversity. IYCF is therefore not a single message but a package of age-specific practices.
In ICDS and health work, IYCF links nutrition, disease prevention and counselling. A Mahila Supervisor may monitor whether Anganwadi workers are giving correct advice during home visits, Village Health Sanitation and Nutrition Days, growth monitoring sessions and mothers' meetings. In Rajasthan villages, a practical example is correcting the belief that water is needed in summer before 6 months.
Remember the frame: IYCF means right feeding at the right age, with breastfeeding protected throughout the first 2 years.
