Key Points at a Glance

  1. 1

The current CET Senior Secondary syllabus does not list a separate irrigation-project bullet under Economy of Rajasthan; this topic is in scope through Geography of Rajasthan water resources, rivers, dams and lakes, and through Economy of Rajasthan links with agriculture, drought and famine.

  2. 2

Rajasthan's irrigation map should be read region-wise: Indira Gandhi Nahar and Gang Canal in the north-west, Chambal command in south-eastern Rajasthan, Mahi in the southern belt, Bisalpur on the Banas in Tonk, and Narmada Canal in the south-west.

  3. 3

The Indira Gandhi Nahar Project brings Himalayan water to western Rajasthan and is officially described as the lifeline of Western Rajasthan.

  4. 4

Rajasthan Economic Review 2025-26 states that completed IGNP canal works have provided irrigation facilities in 16.17 lakh hectares of Culturable Command Area.

  5. 5

Gang Canal is an older canal-irrigation landmark linked with Sri Ganganagar and Hanumangarh; official sources connect it with the Sutlej-fed canal system and north Rajasthan command-area works.

  6. 6

The Chambal Valley frame should be paired with Gandhi Sagar, Rana Pratap Sagar, Jawahar Sagar and Kota Barrage; Rajasthan Economic Review discusses the Chambal command area through Kota, Bundi and Baran.

  7. 7

Bisalpur Dam is on the Banas river in Tonk district and is important as both an irrigation and drinking-water source in Rajasthan's water-resource map.

  8. 8

The Modified Parbati-Kalisindh-Chambal link integrated with ERCP is the current high-yield example of eastern Rajasthan water planning, combining drinking-water security with new and restored irrigation potential.

Why irrigation is central to Rajasthan

Rajasthan's economy is shaped by a permanent water contrast. Rajasthan is India's largest state by geographical area, but the Rajasthan Economic Review 2025-26 notes that it holds over 10.41 per cent of India's landmass and only 1.16 per cent of its water resources. Western Rajasthan has desert conditions, sandy soils, high evaporation and seasonal streams. Eastern and south-eastern Rajasthan have stronger river systems such as Chambal, Banas, Kalisindh and Mahi. This unequal water base explains why irrigation projects are not just engineering works; they influence crop choice, settlement growth, drinking-water supply, drought resilience and famine-risk management.

For CET Senior Secondary 2026, this topic should be read through two syllabus doors. In Geography of Rajasthan it fits the official bullets on rivers, dams, lakes and water resources. In Economy of Rajasthan it supports the official bullets on agriculture, drought, famine and features and issues of the state economy. The syllabus does not require graduation-level engineering detail, but it does require a clear project-river-area-use map.

The basic classification is enough: canals transfer river water, dams store monsoon flow, tanks and anicuts hold local runoff, wells and tubewells draw groundwater, and lift schemes carry water to places where gravity flow is not possible. Micro-irrigation, mainly drip and sprinkler systems, is important because water availability is limited and groundwater extraction is under stress in many districts.

The exam point is simple: read every project with three labels - source, beneficiary area and main use.
