Key Points at a Glance
- 1
The 2026 CET Graduation syllabus places this topic inside Science and Technology through environmental and ecological changes, biodiversity, conservation of natural resources, sustainable development, and the economic importance of animals and plants.
- 2
Environment is the wider surrounding; ecology studies interactions among organisms and between organisms and their physical surroundings.
- 3
An ecosystem must be read through biotic components, abiotic components, energy flow and nutrient cycling, not merely through a list of species.
- 4
Biodiversity has three standard levels: genetic diversity, species diversity and ecosystem diversity.
- 5
India is linked with four global biodiversity hotspots: Himalaya, Indo-Burma, Western Ghats-Sri Lanka and Sundaland.
- 6
The Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 provides the core legal framework for protection and management of wild animals, birds and plants in India.
- 7
Project Tiger was launched in April 1973 to maintain a viable tiger population and conserve biologically important areas.
- 8
The Constitution contains Article 48A on protection and improvement of the environment and Article 51A(g) on the citizen duty to protect the natural environment.
- 9
The Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 restricts dereservation and non-forest use of forest land without the required Central Government approval.
- 10
The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 empowers the Central Government to take measures for protecting and improving environmental quality.
- 11
The Biological Diversity Act, 2002 uses a three-part frame: conservation, sustainable use, and fair and equitable benefit sharing.
- 12
The National Green Tribunal Act, 2010 created a specialised forum for effective and expeditious disposal of environmental and forest-conservation cases.
- 13
Mission LiFE was launched in 2022 as a behaviour-focused environmental initiative built around individual and community action.
- 14
Keoladeo National Park is both a Ramsar site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site; Sambhar Lake is a saline Ramsar wetland, not a freshwater national park.

In CET answers, keep scale, process and legal instrument together: gene/species/ecosystem, conservation/restoration, and statute/treaty/site category are not interchangeable.

Environment and ecology: the basic boundary
Environment is the total surrounding in which organisms and human societies live: air, water, land, climate, soil, resources, built spaces, institutions and living communities. Ecology is narrower and more analytical. It studies interactions among organisms and between organisms and their physical surroundings. A waste rule, a mining clearance or a heat action plan belongs to environmental governance; its effect on food webs, soil organisms, wetlands or disease vectors is ecological analysis.
CET questions often test this boundary through process terms. Pollution is only one form of environmental degradation. Habitat loss, fragmentation, overgrazing, invasive species, groundwater depletion, climate change and unsustainable extraction can damage ecology even without a visible toxic pollutant. Similarly, every green-looking intervention is not ecological restoration; a monoculture plantation may increase tree count while reducing native grassland or wetland biodiversity.
Core filter: environment is the wider setting; ecology explains biological interaction and process inside that setting.
