Measurement for REET L1 Mathematics

REET Level 1 measurement touches five everyday experiences of a child in Classes I to V: length, weight, capacity, time and currency. The primary rule is to begin with hands-on experience, move through non-standard measures such as hand-span, and then connect to the standard units named in the syllabus: centimetre, metre and kilometre for length; gram and kilogram for weight; millilitre and litre for capacity; seconds, minutes, hours and calendar for time; and rupees and paise for currency. The teacher must develop estimation along with conversion so that the child can judge whether an answer is reasonable.

Key points

  • REET L1 measurement covers length (centimetre, metre, kilometre), weight (gram, kilogram), capacity (millilitre, litre), time and the calendar, and Indian currency.
  • Conversion rules a Class 3-5 child must own: 1 centimetre equals 10 millimetres, 1 metre equals 100 centimetres, 1 kilometre equals 1,000 metres, 1 kilogram equals 1,000 grams, 1 litre equals 1,000 millilitres, 1 minute equals 60 seconds, 1 hour equals 60 minutes, 1 rupee equals 100 paise.
  • Estimation must be practised before exact measurement so a learner can judge whether an answer is reasonable.
  • The teacher moves from non-standard units like a hand-span to the standard units the syllabus names, but does not stop at non-standard units alone.
  • A leap year has 366 days because February gains an extra day to make it 29; February in a normal year has 28 days.
