Indian chess Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi won the bronze medal in the men's section of the 2025 FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship held in Doha, Qatar, scoring 9.5 points out of 13 rounds. Magnus Carlsen won the event with 10.5/13, while Vladislav Artemiev secured silver via tie-breaks. Erigaisi became only the second Indian male player, after five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, to finish on the podium at a World Rapid Championship. Simultaneously, India's Koneru Humpy won the bronze medal in the women's section, making it a historic double for Indian chess. Erigaisi also won bronze at the accompanying FIDE World Blitz Championship, becoming the first Indian player to register podium finishes at both Rapid and Blitz events since Viswanathan Anand achieved the same feat in 2017. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya congratulated both players on their historic achievements. The event underlines India's rising dominance in global chess following Gukesh D's World Chess Championship title in December 2024.
