A major nuclear energy infrastructure project has been announced for Khandela tehsil in Sikar district of Rajasthan, as the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) is set to invest approximately ₹3,000 crore in uranium mining operations. The project is expected to generate 1,623 direct jobs, with 80% of these positions reserved for local residents, boosting employment in this historically arid and economically underdeveloped region of northern Rajasthan. The announcement aligns with India's broader nuclear energy expansion strategy, which also includes the upcoming Mahi-Banswara Nuclear Power Plant in tribal Banswara district.

The Sikar uranium project is strategically significant as it will reduce India's dependence on imported uranium and strengthen the domestic nuclear fuel supply chain. India has modest domestic uranium reserves concentrated in states like Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, and Meghalaya. The project is expected to support India's target of achieving 100 GW of nuclear power by 2047 under its clean energy and net-zero commitments. The Khandela tehsil project will also involve a beneficiation plant to process the ore before supplying it to nuclear fuel fabrication facilities.
