On March 15, 2026, Gujarat created space history when Ahmedabad-based startup Omspace Rocket and Exploration Private Limited successfully launched Gujarat's first sounding rocket from Bavaliyari village, near Dholera, at 13:00 hours IST. The rocket — a 4.2-metre single-stage suborbital sounding rocket — reached an altitude of approximately 3 kilometres, carried a mini weather satellite payload for atmospheric and meteorological data collection, and was safely recovered approximately 4 km from the launch site using a parachute system, along the predicted recovery path.

The launch was coordinated with IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre), the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Airports Authority of India (AAI), and the Indian Coast Guard — demonstrating the regulatory framework that India has built for private space launch operations. Omspace builds reusable, liquid-fuelled rockets with 3D-printed engines that significantly reduce costs and enable rapid relaunch capability.

This launch is significant in the context of India's Space Sector Reforms of 2020, which opened space activities to private players under the Space Activities Bill framework and established IN-SPACe as the nodal body. The Indian space startup ecosystem now includes players like Skyroot Aerospace (Vikram-S, India's first private rocket, launched 2022), Agnikul Cosmos, and now Omspace — collectively representing India's 'New Space' revolution.

Rajasthan Relevance: Rajasthan's Pokaran region and Jaisalmer district have historically been associated with defence testing ranges. The Dholera launch near Rajasthan's border highlights the growing aerospace corridor in western India. Rajasthan's Semiconductor Policy 2026 and defence manufacturing ambitions at the Jodhpur-Pali-Marwar Industrial Corridor also align with this aerospace-industrial trend.
