The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved an investment of ₹14,105.83 crore for the construction of the 1,200 MW Kalai-II Hydro Electric Project on the Lohit river in Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh. Details of the scheme, approved on April 8, 2026, continued to be reported through April 11 as more project specifics emerged. Kalai-II is the first hydro project in the Lohit Basin and will be developed jointly by THDC India Limited and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. The project comprises six units of 190 MW each and one unit of 60 MW, and is expected to generate 4,852.95 million units of electricity per year once commissioned after a 78-month construction period. The Central Government will provide budgetary support of ₹599.88 crore for enabling infrastructure, including roads, bridges and a transmission line that will also serve local residents of Namsai and Anjaw districts. Approximately 29 kilometres of roads and bridges will be constructed as part of the project. Hydropower from Kalai-II will contribute to India's non-fossil fuel generation mix and help the country move towards its 500 GW installed non-fossil capacity target by 2030. The Lohit river is a major right-bank tributary of the Brahmaputra that originates in the eastern Himalayas. The project is also expected to catalyse local employment, skill development and connectivity in one of India's most remote and strategically sensitive border districts.
