Later court reporting said the Madhya Pradesh government directly attributed 15 deaths to the Bhagirathpura water contamination tragedy in Indore and compensated 23 families who died during the period, after people drank contaminated tap water beginning January 2, 2026; hundreds were hospitalised. The contamination was traced to a public toilet at a police outpost constructed directly above a 30-year-old drinking water main. Without a proper septic tank, raw sewage drained into a pit and seeped through a leaking joint into the municipal water supply, causing acute symptoms including severe vomiting, diarrhoea, and high fever. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav ordered an investigation and suspended several municipal officials.
