In January 2026, the Border Roads Organisation completed a high-altitude rescue and road-restoration operation at Chatergala Pass in Jammu and Kashmir. Chatergala Pass is located at an altitude of 10,500 ft on the Bhaderwah-Chatergala axis. Heavy snowfall on January 23, 2026 disrupted the route, leaving 5-6 feet of snow on the road. The 118 Road Construction Company of the 35 Border Roads Task Force began snow-clearance work on the morning of January 24 and worked for nearly 40 hours to clear about 38 km of road. The route was opened by the evening of January 25, 2026. This enabled the safe evacuation of 20 stranded civilians and 40 troops of 4 Rashtriya Rifles, along with weapons and stores. The rescue mission was completed at 02:30 hrs on January 26, 2026 with zero casualties. For exam preparation, this is not just a weather update. It is nationally relevant current affairs. It shows BRO's role in building and maintaining strategic roads, bridges, tunnels and airfields in border and inaccessible regions. The static-GK linkage includes border infrastructure, Himalayan geography, disaster response, defence preparedness and civilian connectivity. In RAS and UPSC prelims, direct questions can be asked on the location, altitude, date, organisation and duration of the operation. For mains, the example shows how infrastructure in difficult mountain terrain supports both military mobility and civilian safety during emergencies.
