India notified the WHO on January 26, 2026, of two laboratory-confirmed cases of Nipah virus (NiV) infection in West Bengal. Both patients were healthcare workers aged 20-30 at a private hospital in Barasat, North 24 Parganas district. They developed symptoms in late December 2025 and were admitted in early January 2026. Confirmation came from the National Institute of Virology, Pune on January 13, 2026. Over 190 contacts were identified and tested — all negative. The National Centre for Disease Control announced on January 27 that no further cases were detected. WHO assessed the risk as moderate sub-nationally, low nationally and globally. India has experience managing Nipah outbreaks, primarily in Kerala, including outbreaks/spillovers in 2018, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2024 and 2025.
