On 8 July 2026, the Department of Land Resources under the Ministry of Rural Development held a brainstorming meeting with the National Institute of Urban Affairs and the Department of Posts. The meeting examined possible synergies between India’s digital addressing framework, the Unique Land Parcel Identification Number and DIGIPIN. It was chaired by Land Resources Secretary Narendra Bhushan and attended by senior officials including P. Narahari, Gokul Kulapati and Debolina Kundu.

The governance importance lies in the complementary roles of the two systems. ULPIN gives every rural and urban land parcel a unique digital identity, while DIGIPIN enables precise geo-referenced location identification. Their integration is expected to strengthen interoperability, improve public service delivery and advance India’s wider digital public infrastructure approach.

Participants agreed to begin pilot projects to assess practical use cases. They also agreed to jointly develop an open, standards-based API architecture for seamless integration across government platforms. The initiative is expected to help startups, developers and innovators build citizen-centric geospatial applications and value-added services. The collaboration was described as an important milestone for digital land administration. For administration, the key takeaway is a move toward an interoperable, secure and future-ready digital ecosystem for land governance, aligned with Digital India, open standards, innovation and digital transformation.
