The Indian Coast Guard conducted RPREX-2025, the Regional Level Pollution Response Exercise, off the Mumbai coast. This current-affairs update, dated 2025-12-28, is important because it tests India’s preparedness for a major oil-spill emergency at sea. The exercise created a scenario in which a motor tanker sent a distress call after a collision with a fishing boat caused a hole on board and heavy crude-oil spillage into the sea. To respond to the spill, a specialised Indian Coast Guard Pollution Control Vessel and two additional ICG ships in pollution-response configuration were deployed. The existing article also records participation by the Indian Coast Guard, Mumbai Port Authority and ONGC. According to the source, such Pollution Response Exercises assess the preparedness of all stakeholders in accordance with the National Oil Spill Disaster Contingency Plan. For exams, the topic matters at three levels. First, prelims questions can directly ask about RPREX-2025, the Indian Coast Guard, Mumbai coast, oil pollution and the National Oil Spill Disaster Contingency Plan. Second, it links with static GK themes such as marine pollution, coastal ecology, port safety and the responsibility of oil-handling stakeholders. Third, from a governance angle, the exercise shows that a maritime disaster response is not handled by one agency alone; preparedness of the Coast Guard, port authorities and oil-sector stakeholders has to be tested together. RAS and UPSC aspirants should therefore read RPREX-2025 not only as a defence exercise, but also as a combined example of environmental protection, maritime governance and disaster preparedness.
