A massive explosion at the "Vanaja" fireworks manufacturing unit owned by one Muthumanickam at Kattanarpatti near Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu on April 19, 2026 killed at least 23 workers and injured six others, of whom three women suffered around 60 per cent burn injuries. Approximately 30 workers were directly engaged in routine manufacturing-related processes when the blast tore through the front veranda where labourers were handling raw materials and finishing crackers; over 100 workers were on the premises at the time. Three rooms were reduced to rubble and several adjoining structures flattened. Preliminary inquiries point to friction of raw materials during the manufacturing process as the trigger. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin expressed condolences and announced ex-gratia compensation; the Virudhunagar district administration directed an inspection drive at all licensed fireworks units in the Sivakasi belt, the country's largest firecracker cluster. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, took suo motu cognizance of the reported deaths and injuries, issuing notice to the Government of Tamil Nadu and demanding a detailed report on safety compliance, factory licensing, working conditions and the status of relief and rehabilitation of victims and their families.
