Ahead of Republic Day 2026, the government announced that the 16th India-EU Summit would be held on January 27 in New Delhi, co-chaired by PM Narendra Modi alongside European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The EU leaders, who attended the Republic Day parade as chief guests, held bilateral meetings with President Murmu on the same day.

The summit agenda included the long-pending India-EU Free Trade Agreement, a new Security and Defence Partnership, a Mobility and Migration Agreement, cooperation on AI and critical technologies, and climate action coordination. The presence of both top EU leaders -- a rare occurrence -- underscored the strategic importance India and the EU attach to the partnership.
