Ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) issued an advisory to all political parties regarding the responsible use and disclosure of AI-generated content and synthetic information during election campaigns. The advisory was triggered by reports of hyper-realistic AI-generated political content potentially misrepresenting leaders or spreading false narratives.

The ECI directed parties to clearly label all AI-generated or synthetically altered content with visible disclosures. Failure to comply may attract action under the Model Code of Conduct and applicable digital/election-law provisions, including the IT Act, 2000 and IT Rules, 2021. The advisory also covers deepfake videos, voice cloning, and AI-modified images used in campaign materials and social media.
