Indian Railways reached a landmark milestone, electrifying approximately 99.6% of its 70,142 route-kilometre Broad Gauge network as of March 2026, making it one of the world's most extensively electrified rail systems. This places India ahead of China (82% electrified), Japan (64%), and the United Kingdom (39%). The electrification drive, which was at around 40% a decade ago, accelerated dramatically under the National Rail Plan and the Government of India's push for green transportation. Railway electrification eliminates dependence on diesel traction, significantly reduces carbon emissions, lowers operating costs, and enables higher-speed rail operations. Rajasthan has been a significant beneficiary of this electrification push — key routes including Jaipur-Delhi, Jaipur-Jodhpur, Jaipur-Ajmer, and the Western Rajasthan desert railway lines have been electrified, enabling faster and cleaner train services. The achievement aligns with India's target of complete railway electrification and its broader commitment to net-zero emissions by 2070. The Railway Ministry has stated that complete electrification would result in annual savings of approximately ₹14,000 crore in diesel costs. The milestone also supports the vision of running hydrogen-powered trains and Vande Bharat Express services across the entire network.
