The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has released the Draft National Health Research Policy and invited suggestions and comments from the public. The draft was made available for feedback on 13 July 2026, with the window for submitting comments open until 27 July 2026.

At the heart of the draft is the proposal to establish a National Health Research Agenda, envisaged as the country's central framework for guiding and coordinating health research. The policy sets out to build a "trusted, inclusive, self-reliant and impact-oriented health research ecosystem" that remains responsive to the healthcare needs of the people.

The draft emphasises the promotion of high-quality, ethical and innovative research. It seeks to address both established national health priorities and emerging health challenges, with the ultimate objective of improving health outcomes and advancing equity across the population.

According to the ministry, the draft policy was prepared after extensive consultations with a range of stakeholders, whose suggestions and recommendations were incorporated before opening this public comment period. By inviting wider public participation, the ministry aims to further refine the framework before finalisation.

The initiative reflects a structured effort to strengthen and guide India's health research ecosystem, aligning research priorities with the nation's evolving healthcare requirements. For aspirants, the draft is a notable example of participatory, consultative policymaking in the health sector and of the government's stated push toward self-reliance and impact-driven research governance.
