The Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports announced centenary celebrations marking 100 years of Indian Hockey (1925–2025), to be held on November 7 at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi. India's hockey journey began in 1925 with the formation of the Indian Hockey Federation. Indian hockey dominated the Olympics from 1928 to 1980, winning 8 gold medals. The sport saw a revival after the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, where the men's team won a bronze medal — ending a 41-year Olympic medal drought. The centenary celebrations include a commemorative match, awards for hockey legends, and exhibitions on the sport's history. Major Dhyan Chand — born in Allahabad — remains the greatest hockey player in history, famous for his extraordinary goal-scoring ability; his birth anniversary (August 29) is celebrated as National Sports Day in India.
