Indian chess Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi (World Ranking No. 5, ELO 2708) won the Jerusalem Masters 2025 title on December 4, 2025, defeating five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand in an all-Indian final. In the semifinals, Erigaisi defeated Russian legend Peter Svidler (who had dominated the round-robin with 8/11) in two rapid games. In the final against Anand, rapid games ended level, and Erigaisi clinched the title in the 3+2 blitz tiebreak — winning the first blitz game and drawing the second (sufficient to win the match). Peter Svidler secured third place by defeating Ian Nepomniachtchi. The tournament showcased the strength of Indian chess — with two Indians (Erigaisi and Anand) reaching the final of a prestigious international event. Erigaisi, from Warangal, Telangana, is part of India's new wave of chess prodigies that includes D. Gukesh (World Champion 2024), R. Praggnanandhaa, and Vidit Gujrathi. India's chess ecosystem has been nurtured by FIDE Trainer Rustam Kasimdzhanov and benefited enormously from online training during the COVID era.
