World Hindi Day (Vishwa Hindi Diwas) is observed every year on January 10 to mark the anniversary of the first World Hindi Conference held in Nagpur, Maharashtra, on January 10, 1975. The day celebrates Hindi as a global language and its reach among over 600 million speakers worldwide, making it one of the most widely spoken languages on Earth. In 2026, the Ministry of External Affairs led commemorative events at Indian embassies and missions across the world, with the central theme focusing on Hindi's role in digital connectivity and artificial intelligence. Hindi is enshrined as the Official Language of the Union under Article 343 of the Indian Constitution and has been progressively promoted through the Official Languages Act, 1963 and the Rajbhasha policy. Rajasthan holds a special place in the Hindi linguistic landscape — the state is home to numerous regional dialects including Marwari, Mewari, Shekhawati, Hadoti, Dhundhari, and Mewati, all of which are considered sub-dialects within the Rajasthani language group and are closely related to Hindi and its medieval precursors. The state government actively promotes Hindi along with Rajasthani dialects through the Rajasthan Sahitya Academy (Udaipur), which awards the prestigious Meera Award and Suryamal Mishran Shodh Purskar, among others. World Hindi Day also draws attention to the inclusion of Hindi in United Nations proceedings — a long-standing demand of India, which has been lobbying for Hindi to be granted one of the six official UN language statuses.
