Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited delivered the fourth stealth frigate Mahendragiri under Project-17A to the Indian Navy on 30 April 2026 at Mumbai. The Ministry of Defence release stated that the ship will subsequently be commissioned as INS Mahendragiri. The Acceptance Document was signed by Capt Jagmohan (Retd.), Chairman and Managing Director of MDL, and Rear Admiral Gautam Marwaha, Chief Staff Officer (Technical), Eastern Naval Command, in the presence of MDL Directors and senior Indian Navy officers.
The delivery is significant because Mahendragiri is the final Project-17A class ship being constructed at MDL. The ministry described the event as evidence of India's growing capability in indigenous warship design and construction under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. Project-17A is therefore relevant not only as a naval acquisition item but also as an industrial-capacity marker for defence manufacturing.
Speaking at the handover, Capt Jagmohan said the delivery represented a proud moment in India's shipbuilding journey. He credited the combined effort of MDL, the Warship Design Bureau, the Warship Overseeing Team in Mumbai and various arms of the Indian Navy. He also described Mahendragiri as a state-of-the-art warship with advanced combat capabilities and as a symbol of indigenous defence manufacturing strength. The ship is expected to enhance the Indian Navy's operational capabilities and contribute to India's maritime security architecture. For exam analysis, the case links naval modernisation, public-sector shipbuilding, design institutions and self-reliance in strategic technology.
