INS Taragiri is an important current-affairs development for India’s naval modernisation and defence self-reliance. Taragiri is the fourth ship of the Nilgiri-class Project 17A stealth frigates and the third ship built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited. It was delivered to the Indian Navy on 28 November 2025 at Mumbai and was commissioned as INS Taragiri at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on 3 April 2026 in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

For exams, this development connects defence technology, indigenous manufacturing and maritime security. PIB describes INS Taragiri as a modern stealth frigate with an approximate displacement of 6,670 tonnes, designed by the Warship Design Bureau and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited with support from MSMEs. It is meant for multi-role naval operations, so it should be studied not merely as a commissioning event but also as an example of India’s maritime capability, defence industrial base and Make in India push.

Project 17A can generate prelims questions on ship class, builder, place and dates. In mains answers, it can support points on self-reliance in defence, indigenous design capability and India’s maritime preparedness in the Indian Ocean region. PIB also noted that Taragiri’s build period was compressed to 81 months, compared with 93 months for the first-of-class Nilgiri. This points to learning and efficiency gains in project execution.
