A well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression on October 25, 2025, located approximately 990 km east-southeast of Chennai. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast it would strengthen into a deep depression by October 26 and a cyclonic storm named 'Montha' by October 27. The system was moving west-northwestward with a potential landfall projected over the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada. IMD issued orange alerts for Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal. This was the second cyclonic storm of the 2025 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, and dual cyclonic systems were threatening the North Indian Ocean simultaneously.
