On 21 November 2025, the Government of India made all four major Labour Codes effective — the Code on Wages, the Industrial Relations Code, the Code on Social Security, and the Code on Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions — consolidating 29 central labour laws into a simplified framework. The reform aims to reduce compliance burden on employers, extend social security to gig and platform workers, standardise minimum wages across states, and improve ease of doing business. The Labour Codes allow states to set floor wages aligned with national minimums, making implementation context-specific. For Rajasthan — a state with large MSME, construction, textile, and mining sectors — the Social Security Code extending benefits to unorganised workers is particularly significant. The reform has been debated for over a decade; trade unions have expressed concerns over reduced worker protections, while industry groups welcome the streamlining. This is a landmark structural reform relevant to Paper-II (Indian Economy) and Paper-III (Social Issues) of RPSC RAS Mains.
