On March 13, 2026, PM Modi dedicated ₹526 crore worth of inland waterways projects in Assam and an elevated port corridor in Guwahati during the first day of his Assam visit. On March 14, 2026, he inaugurated projects worth ₹23,550 crore in Silchar, including highway upgrades and educational institutions.

The waterways projects support development of National Waterway-2 (Brahmaputra) for cargo and passenger transport. PM Modi also announced the government's plan to develop Guwahati as a major river port hub for northeastern India, connecting to Bangladesh and Southeast Asian markets.
