Indian Railways' indigenous Automatic Train Protection system Kavach 4.0 has been successfully commissioned across 1,452 route kilometres on the high-density Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah corridors. Kavach uses RFID tags, on-board equipment, and radio towers for real-time communication to prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), control overspeeding, and ensure safety in adverse weather.

Key features of version 4.0 include enhanced location precision, direct Electronic Interlocking integration, optical fiber and UHF radio connectivity, automatic braking, and an SOS facility. Consequential train accidents have declined from 135 in 2014-15 to 14 in 2025-26 (up to Feb 2026), a ~90% reduction.
