The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) issued a notification on January 16, 2026, designating an Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) around Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary in Rajasthan. The ESZ extends from zero to one kilometre beyond the sanctuary boundary, covering approximately 243 sq km and encompassing 94 villages across Udaipur, Pali, and Rajsamand districts.

The sanctuary supports leopards, striped hyenas, jungle cats, Indian pangolins, blue bulls, and chinkaras. The ESZ prohibits commercial mining, polluting industries, brick kilns, and new large tourism infrastructure, while allowing traditional livelihoods under regulation. The State Government must prepare a Zonal Master Plan within two years. A monitoring committee has been constituted to ensure compliance.
