Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah inaugurated India's first cooperative-run multi-feed Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) and Potash Granule Project at the Shankarrao Kolhe Cooperative Sugar Factory in Kopargaon, Ahilyanagar district, Maharashtra, on October 5, 2025. The project involved an investment of ₹55 crore.

The CBG plant will produce 12 tonnes of CBG daily and 75 tonnes of potash from jaggery/molasses — both currently imported by India. A Spray Dryer and Potash Granule manufacturing facility was also launched. The government plans to establish similar units in 15 cooperative sugar factories across the country, showcasing a circular economy model linking sugar industry waste to clean energy and fertilizer production.
