Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya celebrated their 54th Foundation Day on January 21, 2026, marking 54 years of statehood since 1972. The three states were carved out under the North Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971, and achieved full statehood on January 21, 1972.

The Act converted the Union Territories of Manipur and Tripura and the autonomous state of Meghalaya (previously part of Assam) into full states. PM Modi congratulated the people of the three states, highlighting progress in connectivity through the Act East Policy, including the Agartala-Akhaura rail link and Imphal-Mandalay highway development.
